Pakahā/Fluttering shearwaters

In collaboration with local Iwi, DOC and Birds New Zealand, WMIL is supporting the ongoing Birds New Zealand Marlborough pakahā/fluttering shearwater project on Maud Island following the translocation of pakahā between 1996 and 2001.

This involves undertaking long-term monitoring of the source population on Kokomohua/Long Island in Tōtaranui/Queen Charlotte Sound, Te Tauihu-o-te-waka/Marlborough. This research includes burrow monitoring, establishment of artificial burrows, confirming breeding status and breeding success, and quantifying adult and juvenile survival and recruitment.
