Seabird Necropsy

Since 2011, WMIL regularly performs necropsies on seabirds retained on commercial fishing vessels within the NZ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), as part of the Department of Conservation (DOC) Conservation Services Programme.

Seabirds are identified to species level, and the cause of death is determined. This information is used to help to elucidate the effects of commercial fishing on seabird populations. WMIL works alongside DOC staff, academic researchers, and iwi, to maximise what can be learnt from each seabird that is received. The most recent annual report can be found on the DOC CSP website.
