Waiau Toa/Upper Clarence River Trapping

Between 2017 and 2022, WMIL staff regularly serviced a trapline running 26km along each side of the Waiau Toa/Clarence River through the Molesworth Recreation Reserve under contract to the Department of Conservation (DOC).

The removal of mustelids and feral ngeru/cat from this landscape via trapping significantly improved breeding outcomes for the endangered tarapirohe/black-fronted terns, which establish their nesting colonies along this riverbed each summer. WMIL continue to undertake monitoring of tarapirohe, you can find out more here.
